St Stephen’s Church will be reaching out, further into the community, for a fortnight of social action and prayer in and around St Margaret’s from Sunday 29th June to 13th July. They have organised many projects from cleaning gardens to painting Marble Hill Park’s fence, visiting house bound people to quenching the thirst of commuters!

The fortnight will be focussed around ‘Social Action Sunday’ on the 6th July but the events and projects will run throughout. It will all culminate in Marble Hill Park on Sunday 13th July where they will host a Fun day with Face painting, inflatable obstacle courses, magicians and much much more!

And why? St Stephen’s wants to be a blessing to the community and to demonstrate the Good News of God’s love to all people.

No strings, no nonsense, display of love to all!

Next production from Richmond Shakespeare Society is the traditional outdoor summer show, with this year’s offering of Shakespeare’s Henry V running at York House Gardens on 6 - 12 July.

It’s being staged in association with site-specific theatre company Bard Unbound and directed by Lara Muth, founder of Bard Unbound, in her first RSS directing role. Lara specialises in site-specific Shakespeare projects in heritage and museum settings.

‘I was honoured to be invited to direct for RSS as they approach their 75th anniversary season,’ she says. ‘I joined the Society last year and am impressed by their skill and commitment. York House Gardens is a spectacular and evocative location. It immediately conjured up images of earthworks and trenches from the Great War and commandeered and fortified country houses.’

Her view of the play is ‘essentially tragic’, and WWI retains that collective sense of visceral tragedy. ‘Agincourt was a moral victory rather than a strategic one and earned Henry the resources to return and finish what he started,’ she says. ‘He died on campaign, most likely of dysentery, at the age of 34 and never wore the crown he had so spectacularly achieved.’

From this week and throughout the year you can now find the St Margarets Fair at www.stmargaretsfair.org. On Saturday the 12th of July at 12pm the 30th Fair opens on its usual Moormead site. It still continues to be the largest community and charity event in the area with over £15000 shared between local schools and the charities last year.

To celebrate 30 years on Moormead, and in response to the feedback we had via last year’s website survey, there will be two major differences. We’ve negotiated with all the providers of the children’s fairground rides to reduce their cost to 50% of last year’s prices. Just as importantly we have a new provider of ‘loos’. This year there will be 28 individual unisex units, plus a disabled/baby change unit. These will all be situated near the tennis courts just behind the cricket pavilion and will have an attendant looking after them all day.

We’ve always been very proud of the way we cope with litter during and after the event. Over the past 3 years in conjunction with the LBRUT we’ve made extra special efforts to make the event as recycle friendly as possible. This year we’re putting even more effort in that direction, and as always we really do appreciate your on the day contribution to make the Fair as green an event as possible.

An added attraction this year comes from Twickenham Rowing Club with their dry land rowing machines and expertise. You’ll be able to try out your own rowing ability and then watch the finals of their local competition.

Any finally to really celebrate 30 years of the Fair we’ve had some limited edition high quality T-shirts especially produced. There’s just 200 of them and they will be available ‘on the day’ at the Information Tent for £7 each for all sizes. You can also buy them from the 1st of July at Cutters 28 Crown Road and Real Ale Limited 371 Richmond Road. All profits as usual go to the supported schools and charities.

For all the other Fair information and news you’ll just need to follow this link www.stmargaretsfair.org Starting next year you’ll also be able to book your stall online as well as over the phone.

Chase Buchanan are delighted to announce that we’ve secured larger premises in St Margarets Village, for our expanding Sales and Lettings office.

Our fellow Estate Agents at Phillip Hodges are relocating, and no longer require their premises at 124 St Margarets Road. This has created an opportunity for us to move across the road, with minimal upheaval. We have been keen to find a larger office in St Margarets for some time and this prominent site, opposite St Margarets station, is ideal. We are sure this will enable us to continue to work effectively in a comfortable environment.

We will commence refurbishing our new sales and lettings office very soon, with the aim of opening in early September.

If you’re one of those happy souls who likes to remember important dates in social history here’s one to add to your list - July 13th 1954 when — just up the road from where you are reading this — the fuse was lit on the great British pop music explosion!

The story starts in 1948 when Ken Colyer, an amateur musician living in Hounslow, put together a band to play the old time jazz music of New Orleans. As they had been rehearsing in Cranford on the banks of the River Crane they called themselves the Crane River Jazz Band - and took the jazz standard ‘Down by the Riverside’ as their theme tune. By the summer of 1949 “The Cranes” were confident enough to start their own jazz club in the White Hart pub in Cranford. It was an immediate success. True to the spirit of old New Orleans instead of playing records during the interval Ken bashed out American folk songs on a guitar, accompanied by kazoo, washboard and double bass.

In 1952 Ken Colyer decided to make a pilgrimage to New Orleans to check out his favourite music at first hand. In his absence two of the former ‘Cranes’ - clarinettist Monty Sunshine and guitarist/banjo player Tony ‘Lonnie’ Donegan started a new band with trombonist Chris Barber. Hoping that Ken would join them on his return they continued with Ken’s popular ‘guitar and washboard’ interval sessions. But Ken wasn’t coming back so quickly. He was locked up in New Orleans for not having a work permit!

Richmond Council’s Manager for Transport and Highways, Graham Beattie has posted his recommendation for the St Margarets CPZ extension ahead of the 18 June Transport Consultative Group meeting.

They have recommended to extend the CPZ only to Bridge and Winchester Roads and a further review in six months.

Here are the highlights of the recommendation and survey results from the report:

RECOMMENDATIONS

2.1 That the Cabinet Member for Traffic, Transport and Parking approves the implementation of an extension to the St Margarets South CPZ into Bridge Road and Winchester Road, St Margarets

2.2 That a review of the new CPZ extension is undertaken after a period of operation of six months

Results of consultation

4.9 A total of 900 questionnaires were posted via Royal Mail to all properties within the proposed CPZ extension consultation boundary. Of this number a total of 462 (51%) have been returned. A summary of the results of the consultation exercise is shown as Appendix B.

4.10 Out of the 462 who returned their questionnaires, 147 (32%) voted in favour of the CPZ and 305 (66%) voted against the CPZ with 10 (2%) being undecided. The percentages are based on the total number of returned questionnaires.

4.11 Analysis on a street by street basis shows:

Question 1 “Would you like your road to be included in the St Margarets South controlled parking zone (zone S) operating between 10am and 4.30pm on Monday to Friday?”

Substantial support for a CPZ extension in Bridge Road and Winchester Road

Some or marginal support for a CPZ extension in Drummond Place, Hill View Road and Sidney Road

Insufficient support for a CPZ extension in Brook Road, Chertsey Road, Cole Park View, Godstone Road, Kenley Road, Moor Mead Road, Orchard Road, South Western Road, St Margarets Grove, and St Margarets Road.

Question 2 “If the adjacent roads have a CPZ introduced would you then want your road to be included?”

Some support for a CPZ extension in Chertsey Road and Cole Park View.

4.12 Due to the analysis showing substantial support for a CPZ extension in Bridge Road and Winchester Road and that these roads are situated adjacent to the existing CPZ, it is recommended that the CPZ be extended to these two roads only at this time and that the situation be monitored and reviewed after the extension has been in operation for six months. The review will provide the opportunity for any further extensions to the CPZ to be considered.

How to start increasing your distance and pace

Start off running slowly, so you keep some energy in reserve. You can always increase your pace at the end of the run. Stay at a pace that you can easily hold a conversation.

Often running with upbeat music will help to motivate you and improve your pace. If you are planning a tempo session (which involves several sets of fast running for a set period of time) sort out a playlist which will help to keep you running at your target speed.

Running with beautiful scenery will help stimulate you to keep going longer. Running in Richmond Park or down by the river are both ideal.

Build up your distance slowly by adding an extra 5-* minutes onto your longer runs. Follow these sessions either by a rest day or an easy jog.
