Eel Pie Club : LARRY GARNER & THE NORMAN BEAKER BAND

Larry Garner

American bluesman, Larry Garner, has found a true musical soul mate in British blues veteran Norman Beaker, (who we recently saw at The Eel Pie Club backing Chris Farlowe). Garner may have paid his dues in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, while Beaker cut his gigging teeth in northern England with people such as Alexis Korner, Jack Bruce, Jimmy Rogers, BB King etc; but put them on stage together, and they are definitely drawing from the same musical roots. Garner's powerful vocals and expressive musicianship make him a natural front man. His songs are delivered with a sense of irony with lyrics that are both meaningful and amusing. Added to this Larry has a wonderfully expressive voice, is a fine guitarist and a great performer. Inspired by artistes such as Silas Hogan and Clarence Edwards, he has won just about every award including WC Handy and BB King awards.

TwickFolk : DANA AND SUSAN ROBINSON

The genius of a Dana and Susan Robinson performance lies in their ability to capture the imagination of their audience, evoking a transformative experience that touches on the deepest humanity. They can make the audience howl with laughter or hush with poignant reflection as they take them on a journey across America and convey the mystery and wonder of the places they visit.

Underpinning the songs is the undeniable rhythm of their trademark guitar/banjo sound. Whether it is quiet or driving, there is a steady and unrelenting groove to the music that supports the lyric and delivers the story in an effortless and magical way.

A native of the Pacific Northwest, Dana relocated to New England where he discovered both a thriving songwriters scene and the deep well of traditional mountain music. In the early 1980's, Dana settled in northern Vermont and built a house "off the grid" (no electricity and phone) on 30 acres near the Canadian border. There he founded a popular bakery, café and folk music venue. Dana launched into full-time touring after the release of his 1994 debut CD, Elemental Lullabye, and after receiving a request to perform at Carnegie Hall in New York City for Putumayo's Shelter benefit project.

Sue grew up in a musical family in New England. She studied piano, oboe, and Scottish fiddle before meeting Dana in 2002. Sue was working in the environmental field in California when she met Dana at a house concert. Upon moving to North Carolina a short time thereafter, Sue launched into studying with many of the great oldtime musicians in the Asheville area, and naturally adapted to the on-the-road lifestyle.

This date has been rescheduled from September 2012 after their UK tour was postponed for personal reasons

TwickFolk : BLAIR DUNLOP

Blair has already fitted a lot into his young life. From an early age he was encouraged to take to the stage by his parents, folk legend Ashley Hutchings and singer Judy Dunlop, and he has now blossomed into a greatly admired singer, guitarist and actor. Some of the highlights of his performing career include playing Little Willy Wonka in the blockbuster movie of "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" (Johnny Depp starred as the grown-up Willy), touring for the whole of last Autumn in a new production of the play "Lark Rise" and appearing at festivals such as Big

Session, Towersey and Cropredy. In 2011 Blair produced his first EP "Bags Outside The Door" on Rooksmere Records and this immediately plunged him, once more, into the media spotlight attracting outstanding reviews from some leading figures on the music circuit. It also led to him being shortlisted for the BBC Young Folk Awards.

In early 2012 he took to the road as one sixth of The Albion Band, the new incarnation of the group originally founded by his father over 30 years ago. The tour proved that folk music is alive and well in the hands of a new generation of gifted musicians, all of whom, like Blair, are able to bring their own diverse influences to bear on a fine tradition.

In spring and summer 2012 Blair is touring with Fairport Convention in Italy before moving on to become part of The Lady tour, celebrating the work and life of Sandy Denny. He is then performing at a mix of festivals across the UK including Cropredy, Southwell, Towersey and Cambridge.

Early in 2012 Blair started work on his debut album and enlisted a great team of musicians to collaborate on the project including Ashley Hutchings, Pete Zorn, Guy Fletcher and the multi-talented young American sisters Rebecca and Megan Lovell from the Georgian band Larkin Poe. The album, 'Blight & Blossom', was released on Rooksmere Records in October 2012 and features 'Seven Brothers', a song written for him by Richard Thompson.

TwickFolk : JENI HANKINS AND BILLY KEMP (JENI AND BILLY)

The high twang of a banjo starts it off -- or maybe the mournful lilt of the mandolin. Then, a train comes barreling down the reeds of a harmonica. The guitar catches fire and lifts two voices into the high lonesome harmonies of the Appalachian mountains, painting pictures of miners and millworkers, roustabouts and revival preachers, Buicks and beauty queens.

In the past four years, Jeni & Billy have travelled from their home in East Nashville over 150,000 miles throughout the USA & Canada -- and hopped across the Atlantic three times -- just to paint those pictures in song for thousands of people. At festivals and fiddlers' conventions along the way, they have picked up ribbons in songwriting, traditional folk-singing, guitar-picking, and flatfoot dancing.

Novelist Lee Smith says, "Jeni and Billy's stunningly original music is as old as the hills, yet brand new at the same time. Jeni is a true poet and a born storyteller, through and through -- many of her songs contain whole novels. "

"Jeni's songs spring from the true vine. Billy is the perfect partner, skillfully accompanying Jeni with guitar, banjo and harmonies. These two are tradition bearers -- the next generation of traditional music," according to Mary Smith, Director of the Richmond (VA) Folk Music Society.

Jeni & Billy bring to their work distinct musical backgrounds that draw from the deep well of Appalachian roots music.

Jeni Hankins traces her vocal style to Virginia Lowe, the blind music minister of the Friendly Chapel Church on Smith Ridge, the Appalachian community in which Jeni spent her childhood summers. A natural storyteller and prolific writer since childhood, Jeni trained formally with Pulitzer-Prize-winning Northern Irish poet, Paul Muldoon, and earned a Masters in English Literature. While her singing has been compared to the lonesome voices of Maybelle Carter and Iris Dement, her writing has been likened to that of Southerners Carson McCullers, Flannery O'Connor, and Lee Smith.

Billy Kemp, a Baltimore native, embraced the sound of country music in the nearby community of Oella -- the home of Appalachian migrants who came to the city looking for work in the mills. Fired on by dreams of the Grand Old Opry and his passion for the sound of Flatt & Scruggs, Billy headed to Nashville and toured with country bands all over the US, Canada, Germany, and right onto the stage of the Opry. He honed and shared his skills as both student and instructor at the University of Maryland, and built a producing career working with roots artists.

Mountain roads and mountain churches, moonshine and oxycodone, snake handlers and sherbet cake -- you get to know them all at a Jeni & Billy concert. You might arrive a stranger, but you'll leave a member of the family.
