Richmond Shakespeare Society : -THE WHITE DEVIL - OLD EVENT

  • by John Webster
  • directed by Barry Evans

Though John Webster was Shakespeare's younger contemporary (and saluted his colleague's 'right happy and copious industry' in the introduction to The White Devil), a better touchstone for his achievement might be Raymond Chandler, or the work of Quentin Tarantino.

Sex, murder, revenge and much use of dramatic irony create a world in which characters of questionable moral purpose wisecrack on the edge of the grave. And this dark, disturbing environment is illuminated throughout by memorable poetic gems.

This version - specially edited for performance in the Mary Wallace Theatre - guarantees a thrilling evening's theatrical entertainment. "The White Devil" is a masterpiece of English poetic drama, and is sure to delight not just students and lovers of Jacobean Theatre but those with no previous knowledge of the genre.
