Operation Chastise

617 badge

Almost exactly 70 years ago, on the evening of 16th May 1943, an event took place that has become imprinted on the British character. There will be many of us who know the story rather well - the stressed but determined engineer, the ‘press-on-regardless’ pilot and his team of courageous flyers, the dog that was killed and the mighty concrete walls that came crashing down. Most of all we remember a piece of music that is still whistled ironically on holiday jets coming in to land at Malaga and Palma, played at football matches and used in TV commercials. The official name for this event was ‘Operation Chastise’ but to most people it is the ‘Dambusters Raid’.

The Day That Cab Calloway Came to Richmond

 Cab Calloway

The argument about who created rock ‘n’ roll music and who first recorded it has been rattling on since Trixie Smith released “My Man Rocks Me (With One Steady Roll)” in 1922. Whether it was the Boswell Sisters with “Rock and Roll” in 1934, “Rockin’ and Rollin’” by Charlie Gracie in 1952 or Bill Haley and “Rock Around the Clock” in 1955, there have been many shoulders pushing at the boogie woogie wheel - and on December 2nd 1952 one of the greatest early rock pioneers came to Richmond. His name was Cab Calloway - and he was opening a clothes shop.

The Act You've Known for All These Years

BOOTLEG beatles mid 60s

I’ve seen the Beatles twice and heard them once.

The first time was in the ‘Beatles Christmas Show’ at the Astoria Cinema, Finsbury Park, early in January 1964. There were other acts on the bill - Billy J Kramer, the Fourmost, Tommy Quickly, Cilla Black and other members of Brian Epstein’s ‘stable’ but most of us had only come to see the stars of the show. I say ‘see’ because that was all anyone could do. The roar of thousands of desperately over-excited teenage girls screaming their lungs out was overwhelming, impressive and totally drowning any music that the four boys on stage might have played.
