The Crane River Blues
If you’re one of those happy souls who likes to remember important dates in social history here’s one to add to your list - July 13th 1954 when — just up the road from where you are reading this — the fuse was lit on the great British pop music explosion!
The story starts in 1948 when Ken Colyer, an amateur musician living in Hounslow, put together a band to play the old time jazz music of New Orleans. As they had been rehearsing in Cranford on the banks of the River Crane they called themselves the Crane River Jazz Band - and took the jazz standard ‘Down by the Riverside’ as their theme tune. By the summer of 1949 “The Cranes” were confident enough to start their own jazz club in the White Hart pub in Cranford. It was an immediate success. True to the spirit of old New Orleans instead of playing records during the interval Ken bashed out American folk songs on a guitar, accompanied by kazoo, washboard and double bass.

Fitness Tips and Class Times from GeoLifestyle - No. 5
How to start increasing your distance and pace
- Start off running slowly, so you keep some energy in reserve. You can always increase your pace at the end of the run. Stay at a pace that you can easily hold a conversation.
- Often running with upbeat music will help to motivate you and improve your pace. If you are planning a tempo session (which involves several sets of fast running for a set period of time) sort out a playlist which will help to keep you running at your target speed.
- Running with beautiful scenery will help stimulate you to keep going longer. Running in Richmond Park or down by the river are both ideal.
- Build up your distance slowly by adding an extra 5-* minutes onto your longer runs. Follow these sessions either by a rest day or an easy jog.

How to beat your exercising excuses.
- Make sure you warm up well. Begin your warm by walking for 2 minutes and then start jogging. Run easily for about 5 minutes. Taking walking breaks when you need them.
- Keep your pace slow. Do not run too quickly as this will make the session hard.
- Run somewhere new so you do not get bored of your running route.
- Try running some of the free 5K time trial runs in the local parks. These are great fun and provide a good monitor as to how your training is working out.
- Have a go at a new exercise class. Do a workout that you have not done before. This will keep you motivated and help supplement your training.
- Start to run using a heart rate monitor. This will provide a good indicator to how hard you are training and your progression.

Fitness Tips and Class Times from GeoLifestyle - No. 3
How to improve fitness levels.
- Look at a building a race into your training programme as this will keep you motivated.
- If you have limited time to train, try a circuit session. Warm up and then compete the following:
- 10 fast squats
- 20 alternate lunges
- 10 press ups
- Run for 90 seconds
- 20 sit ups
- 20 low squats
- 15 tricep dips
- Run 90 seconds
- 15 squat thrusts with jump
- 10 alternate lunges
- Plank held for 30 seconds
- Repeat and then cool down.
- To improve your fitness levels include speed work or a tempo session in your workout. Always warm up and cool down. For the speed session, increase your speed for a short distance and then run easily a similar distance. For the tempo session increase your pace so it is comfortably hard for 4-15 minutes depending on your fitness levels. Run easily for 2-5 minutes and then repeat.
- Include a strength training session in your programme. This will help to prevent injuries. Include squats, lunges, single leg squats, press ups and stomach exercises in your regime.

Fitness Tips and Class Times from GeoLifestyle - No. 2
How to improve fitness levels.
- Always warm up for about 5 minutes before you do any exercise. If you are going out running, start off by walking so you get yourself ready for your run. Stretching is not necessary before a run, but will help reduce muscle soreness at the end of your exercise session. Again cool down for about 5 minutes.

Event Reminder: The Real Thing
Next show from the Richmond Shakespeare Society is Sir Tom Stoppard’s theatrically pyrotechnical The Real Thing, an extraordinary semi-autobiographical play by turns hilarious and touching, and uncannily blurring stage illusion with real life.
Successful playwright Henry is married to actress Charlotte, but is in a secret liaison with another actress, Annie, who is married to actor Max. Ultimately their affair will wreck both marriages.
Director Simon Bickerstaffe says: “Beware. Nothing is as it seems. Gone are Stoppard’s contrivances and implausibility. It’s a play about real people, and highly prescient, as he left his second wife for Felicity Kendal, who played Annie during its first run in 1982 — a real case of life imitating art.
