Event Reminder: GASS Day - 11 September 2010

GASS Fun

GASS Day is on Saturday 11th September and starts at 1.00pm. The streets involved are Haliburton, Heron, Newry, Northcote and Talbot. To find them cross the A316, walk up St. Margarets Road towards Isleworth, turn left past the Ailsa Tavern and walk down Northcote Road. Voila!

Adding to the day’s sense of community at 2.30pm local kids in fancy dress will parade around the area “Beating the Bounds” with willow wands. Although the ritual is pre-Christian the children see it as pure “Harry Potter” with the presence of a kilted bagpiper adding a touch of “McMagic”.

GASS Day pitches are available to residents and non-residents alike. The cost of a resident pitch is £2, for non-residents it is £5. Please note that these pitches are for NON-COMMERCIAL purposes only.

For more information or to register a pitch please call Laurence on 0208 400 9822

Something to Get Your Teeth Into

Christophe Wilhelm Hufeland

In 1826 ‘The Family Oracle of Health’ reported on the rapid spread of tooth decay throughout the nation over the previous 25 years. A number of reasons for this were put forward. One was the increased consumption of sugar from the West Indies - although this was disputed by some who argued that the West Indians who worked on the plantations and ate considerable quantities of sugar themselves, seemed to be remarkably untroubled by bad teeth. Another explanation, advanced by the German physician Christophe Wilhelm Hufeland, was that consuming hot and cold foods or drinks immediately after each other caused invisible cracks in the tooth enamel to open up and allow decay to enter. Surprisingly that argument still had its supporters into the late 1930’s.

The Weeping Willow Tree

Weeping Willow

Some sources say that the most common of the cultivated Weeping Willow species (_salix x sepulcralis_) was first introduced into this country from a German nursery in 1908… which does seem a little late in the day considering the hundreds of thousands of the trees that are now to be found across the length and breadth of Britain.

A Mysterious Presentiment... or Two?

Ship

The Royal Naval Female School that came to St. Margarets from Richmond in July 1856 was founded in 1840 by Admiral Sir Thomas Williams to “provide education for the daughters of necessitous officers.” His endowment of £1000 (equivalent to £55,000 today) marked the end of a long career serving his country with distinction during the American Revolutionary War, the French Revolutionary War and the Napoleonic War.

The St Margarets Community Newsletter on the BBC!

Vince Taylor

Ziggy Stardust Came From Isleworth

On the 23rd April 2009 the St Margarets Community Website carried an article about Vince Taylor, a 1960’s rock ‘n’ roll singer born in Isleworth. After enjoying some moderate success in France Vince fell victim to the powerful psychedelic drug LSD. During his struggle to hold his mind and his failing career together Vince meet David Bowie who was inspired by him to create his alter-ego Ziggy Stardust, the “leper Messiah” swallowed up by the excesses of rock stardom.

Fun And Games At Kendal House

In its time the Isleworth/St Margarets riverside has been graced by some fine and famous buildings. There was Lacy house, home for a while to Richard Brinsley Sheridan, Kilmorey House, built for but never occupied by the Earl of Kilmorey, Gordon House, home of lawyer and humorist Thomas Chandler Haliburton, Nazareth House and St Margarets, the family seat of the Marquis of Ailsa and over whose grounds is built the district that now bears its name. But of them all perhaps the most notable, if not the most famous was Kendal House, the home of the Duchess of Kendal, the German mistress of King George I.

Pillar Boxes

Anonymous Pillar

Walk through the archway at Old Richmond Palace towards the Green and you will see in front of you a historical rarity. It looks so commonplace that most people walk by without even noticing. It is a red, cast iron, pillar-box, just like any of thousands to be found all over the country, but it differs from them in one unusual way. It carries no royal cipher.

A Bird You Must Not Miss

Murgatroyd

Back in the 60’s and 70’s middle class children called Tristram and Jocaste collected stamps, went to gymkhanas and watched “Blue Peter” on the BBC. Working class kids called Jason and Charlene kicked tins around the street, cheeked their teachers and watched “Magpie” in ITV. Or at least that was the perception.

The Ballad of the Crane

River Crane

I sometimes wonder myself how many people living in St. Margarets today actually know about the River Crane. Although it runs right through our neighbourhood it is hidden and out of sight, lost behind fences and hedges, tucked away at the bottom of gardens and buried under bridges and culverts.

LOUISIANA PART 2: The Traditional Music of the Louisiana Cajuns

Joseph Falcon

The traditional music of the Cajun people of Louisiana is unique. It is sung in 17th century French and comes in two sizes - toe tapping, crowd pleasing ‘two step’ dances and slow, soulful waltzes, that still echo with the sadness and sense of separation of “Le Grand Dérangement”. (New readers will have to check out last week’s article.)

Over the centuries the performance of traditional Cajun music has evolved from solo singers, to singers with triangles, to singers with fiddles up to its current form with fiddlers, guitar players, triangle players and accordionists.
