An Image for Everyone

Paris Peace Sign

In the immediate hours following the terrorist attack in Paris on Friday 13th November a new image began to appear on the streets of the city. It consisted of an outline of the Eiffel Tower laid over the familiar ‘peace sign’ evoking a sense of unity in the nation, support for the victims and a wish for peace. Even before the details of the atrocity were fully known this simple cartoon was being shared by millions around the world.

The Lock Busters

This is the time of the annual River Thames ‘Draw-Off’. You may have noticed. The weirs at Richmond Lock have been raised and the river allowed to settle down to its natural depth and flow. For long periods of the day, from Richmond Lock to Teddington, the river is now un-navigable for larger vessels. Local boat people know that and on 19th February 1944 so did the German Luftwaffe.

Fado in Lisbon

Perhaps the most widely loved thing to come out of Portugal is probably the least well known. Its name is Fado, a traditional folk genre described by its thousands of ‘aficionados’ as the ‘Soul of Portugal’. It is a sombre, soulful and melancholic retelling of old themes – of broken hearts, of social hardship, of poverty and of the sea. It is best contained in the Portuguese word ‘saudade’, which means longing or a sense of permanent and irreparable loss. Its history is uncertain…
