The Fire at Twickenham Studios

Twickenham Fire

Eighty years ago, on the 18th September 1934, ‘The Times ’reported that Twickenham Film Studios was about to spend £500,000, that’s over £30 million in today’s money, on film production. Opening a modern sound stage on the site, producer and studio owner Mr Julius Hagen announced a list of films that would be shot in this new facility. These included ‘The Morals of Marcus’ starring ‘The Mexican Spitfire’ – Miss Lupe Velez, ‘Vintage Wine’ with Seymour Hicks and Claire Luce and ‘Squibs’ featuring Betty Balfour and Stanley Holloway. Mr Hagen told reporters that the new sound stage, 125 feet long and 70 feet wide, featured all the very latest acoustic properties and air-conditioning systems.

Governor Vacancy for Orleans Primary School

Orleans Primary School has a vacancy for a Local Authority Governor. Governors are vital to the running of the school and it is exciting being involved in new developments, helping the school improve and meet its targets. Having recently retained our outstanding rating by Ofsted, the school is striving to maintain these high standards and continue to improve while ensuring the successful transition to a 2 form entry primary school. Governors need to have the time to commit to full governors meetings, committee meetings and other tasks, at least some of which take place during school hours. We are looking for individuals who have particular skills or interest in finance and in health and safety, but most of all we need someone who is passionate about school improvement.

The Angels of Mons

ANGELS The Bowmen cover

“’Heaven’s Knight, aid us!’

And as the soldier heard these voices he saw before him, beyond the trench, a long line of shapes, with a shining about them. They were like men who drew the bow, and with another shout their cloud of arrows flew singing and tingling through the air towards the German hosts."

Hill View Road and Pavement Improvements

hillview road plan

As a part of our Borough wide programme to improve roads and pavements we will be carrying out footway maintenance works in Hill View Road, Twickenham. The works will generally consist of re-laying defective kerbs and footway surface repairs.

We also intend to widen the pavement on the southside of the road from the bridge to the junction of Moor Mead Road to allow for easier pedestrian access due to the tree roots which have caused the pavement to become uneven.
