Lib Dems Deliver Petition Against the Closure St Margarets Footbridge

On Tuesday 8 July 2014, St Margarets and North Twickenham Councillors, Alexander Ehmann and Ben Khosa will submit a 600+ signatory petition to Liberal Democrat, London Assembly Member, Caroline Pidgeon. The petition, which calls for the withdrawal of Transport for London’s (TfL’s) plans to decommission an existing footbridge over the A316 in St Margarets, Twickenham, will be passed on to Mayor Boris Johnson by Caroline Pidgeon.

Local Liberal Democrat Councillors, Alexander Ehmann, Ben Khosa and Geoff Acton (Councillors for St Margarets and North Twickenham Ward) have put their weight behind local residents and concerned parents, who have expressed dismay over TfL’s recent proposal to dismantle the current footbridge crossing of the A316 at St Margarets roundabout and replace it with Toucan crossings.

The current bridge is extensively used by parents and children commuting too and from schools in the locality and the proposed changes have sparked outrage from many, who believe that the changes create unnecessary risks for young people crossing the busy dual-carriageway.

Separately, Councillors Ehmann, Khosa and Acton have written to London Mayor, Boris Johnson and Richmond Council Leader, Lord True, asking for the current consultation to be withdrawn and for a proper investigation of alternatives to be undertaken.

Commenting on the petition and its submission to Caroline Pidgeon AM, Cllr Ehmann said:

“The people of St Margarets and North Twickenham have spoken. Over 600 local citizens have asked TfL to withdraw their inept consultation and reconsider plans to remove our community footbridge.

“TfL must not continue to act with the arrogance and disdain to local concerns that they have to date. The strength of opinion is plain to see and TfL need to accept they got this one wrong.”

TfL Blasted for Stirring Trouble between St Margaret’s Pedestrians and Cyclists

Local Councillors and Richmond Cycling have discussed the Transport for London (TfL) consultation on the removal of the footbridge over the A316, coming to the conclusion that the proposal has little merit for cyclists and is cynical ploy by TfL to prompt division and discord, where the real rationale is cost reduction.

St Margaret’s and North Twickenham Councillor, Cllr Alexander Ehmann said:

“Not only are TfL proposing to dismantle bridges in St Margaret’s with no clear case, but they are also ‘burning bridges’ between those that walk and those that cycle. The truth is that St Margaret’s and North Twickenham’s pedestrian and cycling communities are of one mind on this issue - the consultation is a disgrace and should be withdrawn “

Tim Lennon, Campaigns Coordinator at Richmond Cycling Campaign said:

“By trying to make the area in front of the school shared space, this design will be less usable for both walking and cycling. At peak times there will be severe conflict between walking and cycling across the whole junction, and to make things worse, nothing has been proposed to calm the traffic or more generally to make the crossing feel safe for the hundreds of families that would have to use it every day.”

He added:

“Local people have made it very clear how they view the relative safety of a bridge versus a toucan crossing. Although a ground level crossing will improve cycling access to the area, the proposed design is nothing more than a feeble sticking plaster. Cycling and walking provision on the A316 is mostly very poor, and nothing in this project will change that.”
