There is a busy and exciting summer at Orleans House. August will see an extravaganza of materials and techniques with workshops for everybody, from a Textile Tastic workshop for 4-5 year olds and frenzied days of activities for 6-9 and 9-14 year olds, to our Photography Summer School for 12-14 and 15-17 year olds. Week 1: Elements of Art

Tuesday 2 August – Drawing and Painting Fire

Make your own egg tempera paint and use it to create a fantastical fire creature with artist Dawn Smithers.

Wednesday 3 August – Printing Air

Work with Ben Barbour and use different materials to create a print of a dramatic sky inspired by Van Gogh.

Thursday 4 August – Earth Sculpture

Experiment with Megan Dowsett to make sculptures using clay, earth and natural materials.

Friday 5 August – Water Installation

Work with Imogen Luddy to create a hanging installation in the grounds of Orleans House, before making a small boat to see if it can float.

Week 2: A Genre a Day

Monday 15 August – Picturing Portraits

Visit the Richard Dadd exhibition with Dawn Smithers before making your own self portrait and frame.

Tuesday 16 August – Still as a Sleeping Lion

Look at the work of still life artists and use printmaking to create your own masterpieces with artists Katherine and Jane Chandler.

Wednesday 17 August – Over the Hills and Far Away

Make a model camera and create ‘photographs’ of a visit to an imaginary place, with artist Anna Saunders.

Thursday 18 August – Every Picture Tells a Story

Work with Caroline Jones to tell your own story in pictures on a scroll, using a range of washes and mark making techniques.

Week 1: Elements of Art

Tuesday 2 August – Drawing and Painting Fire

Use drawing, inks and mixed media to explore the fantastical creatures of Hieronymous Bosch, with artist Ben Barbour.

Wednesday 3 August – Printing Air

With Megan Dowsett, discover the possibilities of collograph and monoprinting to recreate the moods of different weather.

Thursday 4 August – Earth Sculpture

Make bowls and dishes inspired by bark, trees and all things natural, with artist Emma Middleton.

Friday 5 August – Water Installation

Work with Dawn Smithers to build an installation before making models that can float on water.

Week 2: A Genre a Day

Monday 15 August – Picturing Portraits

Tuesday 16 August – Still as a Sleeping Lion

Create a clay animal in an action pose before using these models to draw still life images, with artist Dawn Smithers.

Wednesday 17 August – Over the Hills and Far Away

Discover the possibilities of heat transfer inks to create a fantastical landscape wall hanging, with artist Megan Dowsett.

Thursday 18 August – Every Picture Tells a Story

Work with Emma Middleton to tell your favourite stories and then turn them into jigsaw puzzles in the style of the old masters.

Tuesday 9 August – Wanders of the Imagination

Leap out of your mind to create a completely imaginative, fantastical scene, before turning it into a 3 dimensional ‘diorama’ and inventing creatures to live in it, with artist Dawn Smithers.

Wednesday 10 August – A Fairytale Journey

Use fimo and a range of construction materials to create the characters of all our favourite fairytales, with artist Megan Dowsett.

Thursday 11 August – Woven Wonders

From bicycle wheels, to picture frames and cutlery racks, use fabrics, threads and plastics to explore the joys of weaving, with artist Megan Dowsett.

Textile Tastic Workshop for Children with Disabilities, Ages 8+

Friday 12 August, 10am – 12pm, £10
Discover the joys of building pictures and patterns from fabric. Explore the possibilities of marbling and tie-dying to colour fabric. Then use collage, fabric pens and crayons and some sparkle to create your own pictures.

Textile Tastic Workshop for 4-5 Year Olds

Friday 12 August, 10am – 12pm OR 2pm – 4pm, £10
Discover a wealth of different ways to build a picture on fabric. Use collage, heat transfer paints, and fabric pens and crayons to create a textile picture of your favourite things.

Coach House Photography

Photography Summer School

Explore the wide variety of effects you can create using digital cameras. Then develop, transform and recreate your photos into utterly magical images using computer imaging programmes.

  • 10am – 3pm each day. £45 for two days. Please bring a packed lunch.

Learn, play and explore together in our multi-sensory sessions designed to encourage creativity, curiosity and develop skills in communication, co-ordination and social interaction.
