Beware Bogus 'Charities' and Third World Appeals

Residents regularly receive leaflets asking for items of clothing and household goods to be left for collection.

It is estimated by the Association of Charity Shops that the potential value of donated clothing and other items ‘lost’ to legitimate charities as a result of these bogus ‘charities’ collections amounts to over £1 million per annum. Many genuine charities rely on such doorstep collections for a substantial proportion of their shop sales.

Not All Alleged Charities are Registered

If unsure the number on the leaflet can be checked with The Central Register of Charities on 0845 3000 218 or online at www.charity-commission.gov.uk.

For example, leaflets have recently been distributed in St Margarets by Cotrado Ltd (5545502). This is not a registered charity.

Third World Clothing Appeal Scams

A number of ‘companies’ purport to collect clothing and other items for the poor in third world countries. These ‘companies’ sell them for their own gain.

Leaflets will include a company registration number. These ‘companies’ although registered, are not legitimate and may have been dissolved. They are not or do not submit accounts so not only are they making a profit they are also avoiding paying taxes.

If unsure the number or ‘company’ name on the leaflet can be checked with Companies House on 0870 33 33 636 or online at www.companies-house.gov.uk (direct link to the search page)

Remember

If you do have unwanted items it is better to take them to a local charity shop or wait until a registered charity bag is put through your door rather than encourage these bogus companies to continue.

Some ‘companies’ to look out for include:

  • A&P Collection Ltd (5769478) — Incorporated April 2006
  • ASD Ltd (4497391) — Registered as dissolved company Olonex
  • Europe Suppliers Ltd (5401427) — Incorporated March 2005
  • G.V. Clothing (4333357) — Green Valley Clothing Ltd: dissolved August 2004
  • Kraslava Services Seven Ltd (04899445) — Company dissolved Sept. 2005
  • Textal Ltd (5733047) — Registered in March 2006 as Recycling Port Ltd
  • Third World Clothing Collection (5482825) — Incorporated as Pajury’s June 2005
  • “Unwanted clothing collection” (5583979) — Registered as Rogaile Ltd Oct. 2005

Europe Suppliers Ltd (54014277) are currently opperating in the East Yorkshire area, leaflets seem to be coming therough the letterbox on a weekly basis.

G at 16 May 2007 11:35 AM

Europe Suppliers Ltd (54014277) are also currently opperating in the Bexley, Kent area.
If you receive one of their leaflets call Bexley trading standards on 020 8308 7627.
Also you could leave out a bag of mouldy, rotting household waste with their leaflet attached. That’s what i plan to do on their next collection day!

dave skinner at 16 May 2007 12:20 PM

I recently received a leaflet from A&P Collection and left a bag of unwanted clothes etc to be collected. When no one turned up I checked them out only to discover they are bogus.

Beware, they’re in the Ealing area.

Martine at 6 June 2007 4:57 PM

I’m told it costs charities a lot of money to dispose of good they receive which they can’t sell. Some of the old clothes I need to dispose of are probably not good enough to sell in local charity shops. However they aren’t quite bad enough to throw out of for the local council to collect with the fabric scrap. For example I have a skirt with a broken zip which I don’t want any more. So I think maybe it’s better to give such things to A&P Collections or similar than any of the alternatives. If someone malkes a living out of it is that such a bad thing? Some of the staff working in charity shops are paid.

A company called ‘Helping Arms’ left me a sack (Milton Keynes) and I just decided to do a quick search on them and so pleased I did as it would seem from the information on here, they are bogus and just selling to make their own profit. The bag will go straight down the charity shop now.

Maxine at 13 June 2007 3:40 PM

A&P have dropped leaflets in the SE23London area. My husband instantly said that they were a bogus charity.
I think one should always research the registered charity number or ring the telephone number to enquire about the destination and the purpose for which your donations are to be used.

We are from South Africa and know there are thousand of poor people in need who need these clothes, isn’t this a form of fraud? Can’t they be reported and prosecuted?

Why are you shouting about that A&P Collection? People, don’t you realize that police can’t do anything about it? It’s a registered company which do not state on their leaflets that they are a charity. Nothing is against the law here. They just collect items and cheaplly sell ‘em to third world countries.

This sham charity A&P have this week issued mailouts in the Hammersmith & Fulham area. In this instance they have chosen or been informed that this is a most opportune time as the properties within the entire building are currently undergoing a refurb, which requires most cupboards to be emptied of all contents therefore rediscovering all manner of forgotten, unused and unwanted goods. They are scheduled to collect tomorrow, having read that they do not aid the needy I shall fill a bag with all the lost socks, old knickers, lost earrings, old blankets and unwanted freebie mag-bags that I’ve been collecting for reasons unknown over the years. And if they are able to make money out of that lot of old tat - then I say ‘Good Luck’ to them!

Christine Scott at 9 November 2007 9:16 PM

Hey, I’ve just had a leaflet put through my door (south yorkshire) from europe supplies ltd.

I have spoken to the man who gave me the leaflet. He is a refugee from eastern europe. Is it really such a “horrible crime” and “massive scam” that these people who have next to money money, will go and sell these clothes to people in poor countries who can’t afford to shop at the sort of shops we can, and to make a bit of money for them selves???????

When clothes are given to charity shops, they too are also sold on aren’t they?!?!?! I wonder if the clothes given to charity shops ever actually reach poor people… Fair enough the money they make goes back into the charity, however I would rather my clothes go to the people who are collecting them from my house tomorrow morning. The money they make from it will surely help them too…

My next door neighbour alerted me to this “scam” telling me “you do know that the clothes don’t go to poor countries, they keep them them selves!!” And I thought to myself, how ignorant are you?!?! If the man coming tomorrow is so poor that he has to masquarade as a con artist to get clothes, then I feel even more strongly about digging through my old stuff to find anything at all that I can give.

You need to all wake up and just think about why these people may be doing this. There are two sides to every story.

Got a leaflet from A&P collection in the Balham area. They are collecting this Tuesday 27/01. There leaflet came through a few days after a legitimate charity is collecting on the Wednesday. I suspect that what they do, is check where legitimate charities are collecting and collect a day or two earlier. They are working on the assumption that people may confuse the days or put it out a day or two earlier.

Paul at 13 August 2008 10:47 PM

We are in Durrington, Worthing.
Had a ‘Helping Arms’ blue bag through the door yesterday and started to fill it up this morning as they are going to collect tomorrow. Decided to look them up as I realised they weren’t a charity from the wording on the bag.
Looking into it trading standards have asked them to change the use of the word charity back in July 07.
If you read the wording underneath the boldy typed thank you, you can see that they have written about the fact the items will be sold on to african / eastern european countries as affordable items and then also something about the fact that they provide jobs for people in those countries sorting the clothes and for people over here sorting, transporting & collecting them.
I dont mind the fact that their being sold on cheaply as I dont think our local shops would accept them - to good to throw but not good enough to sell here iykwim? It just makes me worry that if they are profiting from this are they just throwing away donations like mine? Think I might take it all up to the salvation army bank but now I feel guilty just in case they are legitimate - annoying as I cant search them on companies house as its a sunday…. dont think I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt though until they do get charity status that they were applying for in 2007.
